iPhone or Android? Meet Digital Alberta’s newest board members

On November 12, Digital Alberta held its annual AGM. In true digital style, Skype was on the big screen and boardroom tables in Edmonton and Calgary were littered with various devices, popcorn and Greek take-out. Thanks to Edmonton Digital Arts College and ZGM for hosting us.

In addition to going through the usual topics and formalities, we had the distinct pleasure of voting in four new fresh faces: Paul Bellows, Darren Northcott, Derek Hovinga and Michael Warf. They join Digital Alberta’s nine board veterans, bringing the board total to lucky 13.

Going into 2016, 30% of DA board members are women and we have representation from Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge. Our board members work at post-secondary institutions, creative agencies, and co-working spaces. They are business leaders, UX specialists, project managers, digital strategists, content creators, and artists. Interested in joining the fun? We’d love to hear from you (info@digitalalberta.com). From volunteer positions, to committee opportunities, there’s always room for new Alberta talent.

So what does it take to join our ranks? Get to know some of our noobs.

Derek Hovinga. Day job: Project Manager, V Strategies Inc. (Calgary)

@EvanW2K because his whole goal in life is to get Burton Cummings to RT him.

Why are you excited to join the Digital Alberta team?
I’m kind of a young boy in the industry. I’m excited about learning from some great professionals in Alberta and bringing some fresh thinking of my own to the table.

Michael Warf. Day job: Web Services Manager, University of Lethbridge (Lethbridge)

A must follow Twitter account.
@producthunt – Tweets from the website of the same name, it’s a great place to see what’s new and novel in the digital product space daily.

iPhone or Android?
Either and both. I was a long-time iPhone user (I bought the original iPhone from a guy in NYC on launch day) until the iPhone 4, then jumped ship to Android when Google launched the NEXUS devices (stock Android woos me with an unpolluted experience that the carrier versions can’t seem to get right). I currently use one of those swanky invite-only OnePlus 2 phones running Oxygen (Android 5.1.1).

Why are you excited to join the Digital Alberta team?
While Alberta is rich in many things, I think a stronger community face of our industry is a must for credibility, growth and nurturing of new talent – I’m most interested in amplifying the great stuff that we’ve already got within our borders to new audiences elsewhere.

Darren Northcott. Day job: Sr. User Experience Architect – UXGuys (Calgary)

@oatmeal – because hilarious.

Why are you excited to join the Digital Alberta team?
I’m excited to help bring different aspects of the digital world together and help create a community here in Alberta where different verticals can collaborate and push the boundaries of the digital space.
